“The best records offer their own unique world to inhabit. But few do it quite the way ‘The Wolves’ does” (Doug Wallen, Mess + Noise). Combining elements of psych-folk, dream pop and lo-fi-indie, the quietly remarkable debut album from Brighter Later, ‘The Wolves’, draws us in with its ghostly strangeness and the echoes of the familiar recast into something new. The singles drew rapt praise for their “dreamy brilliance” (HCM), with Indie Shuffle describing it as “music you can imagine to.” Recorded and produced by Jaye Kranz in her home, an old church in Melbourne’s west, the ten spellbinding tracks recall certain music antecedents – the breathy spell of early Cat Power, the haunting, narcotic beauty of Low – but one album in, they’ve already carved out a sound that is indelibly their own: expansive, cinematic and affecting in equal measure. Brighter Later will be in full-band mode for this launch, with Jaye Kranz & Virginia Bott joined by some special guests, including some who played on the album: Shane O’Mara and Pony Face’s Simon Bailey.
